Revolutionizing Healthcare for Urban Migrant Workers

Maitri’s flagship initiative, Project Awaaz, was at the forefront of reducing and preventing the spread of HIV/AIDS and Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) among highly vulnerable migrant populations—most notably rickshaw pullers and unorganized sector workers—across the Central District of Delhi. Driven by the harsh realities of displacement, seasonal migration, and a lack of socio-economic safety nets, these communities face disproportionately high health risks. Project Awaaz steps into this void, replacing vulnerability with awareness, access, and systemic medical support.

Our Three-Pillar Framework: Prevention, Treatment, and Care

Project Awaaz operates a holistic, ground-level intervention strategy designed to meet migrant workers exactly where they are:

  • Behavioral Change & Targeted Awareness: Conducting intensive community outreach and educational campaigns that dismantle stigmas, address lifestyle-associated health risks, and promote preventive sexual health practices.
  • Decentralized Healthcare Delivery: Reaching the unreachable by deploying rapid, on-site testing clinics and establishing non-traditional condom distribution outlets within transit hubs and informal settlements to maximize accessibility.
  • Systemic Healthcare Linkages: Bridging the gap between marginalized individuals and formal medical institutions. Project Awaaz actively strengthens pathways to state health service providers, ensuring that those infected or at-risk receive continuous, high-quality treatment, counseling, and long-term care.

The Legacy of Project Awaaz:

Through 15 years of uninterrupted, trust-based community engagement, Project Awaaz has transformed the landscape of urban public health in Central Delhi— turning an invisible, high-risk workforce into an informed, empowered, and medically protected community.
