For centuries, the holy towns of Vrindavan and Radhakund have drawn pilgrims seeking spiritual solace. Tragically, they have also become destinations of last resort for thousands of elderly, abandoned widow mothers. Cast aside by their families and stripped of financial security, these women face a harsh reality of absolute destitution.
At the very heart of Maitri are our core foundational beliefs: loving-kindness and compassion. Derived from the Sanskrit word for unconditional friendship, Maitri represents a deep, non-judgmental empathy for the emotional and physical needs of others.
MaitriGhar—"Home of Friendship"—is the ultimate living embodiment of these values. It is a sanctuary where these precious mothers can heal from the trauma of rejection and live their remaining years enveloped in absolute respect, safety, and deep-rooted dignity.
Maitri operates two purpose-built residential ashrams designed specifically to transform compassion into direct action, meeting both the physical and emotional needs of aging women:
Together, these safe havens provide a nurturing environment where up to 200 residential mothers are completely protected from the vulnerabilities and neglect of the outside world.
Beyond the residents living inside our ashrams, the need in the wider community remains immense. Guided by a spirit of boundless care, Maitri extends its blanket of devotion in Radhakund to support an additional 250 elderly widow mothers living in the surrounding area. Through this vital outreach program, these 250 women are welcomed into our family, receiving daily nutrition, essential clothing, and facilitated healthcare.
At MaitriGhar, dignity means ensuring that every single basic human need is met unconditionally and with love. Maitri assumes total, lifelong responsibility for our mothers through a comprehensive framework of holistic care:
"A mother, once adopted, is a mother with Maitri forever."
Experiential Joy & The Outside World
To foster deep emotional bonding and ensure they never feel isolated, Maitri fills the mothers' lives with opportunities for joy and exploration. We take them on beautiful spiritual pilgrimages across India—including Haridwar, Rishikesh, Ayodhya, Varanasi, and the Jagannath Mandir. In a landmark journey of pure wonder, the mothers were even taken to Mumbai, where many experienced the breathtaking sight of the ocean for the very first time in their lives.
Lifelong Devotion: Last Rites
The ultimate testament to the loving-kindness we offer is our eternal vow. Once a mother is welcomed into the Maitri family, she is cherished until her very last breath. When the time comes, Maitri ensures that her final journey is treated with the highest reverence, performing her last rites in strict accordance with her personal customs and religious traditions.
At MaitriGhar, it is about providing a family, not just charity. By living out our core beliefs of loving-kindness and compassion every single day, we ensure that those who were once forgotten are celebrated, protected, and deeply loved.
